Why Is This Idiot Still On The Air?
Filed under: Media MinuteRadio host, homophobe, hate monger Michael Savage has created some scandal with his uneducated comments yet again.
This time, Savage stated that nearly every child with autism is just “a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out."
And, to make matters even worse, he actually believes that!
Savage has said that he has no intentions to apologize for his remarks.
The idiot says, “My main point remains true. It is an overdiagnosed medical condition. In my readings, there is no definitive medical diagnosis for autism.”
He even went on to say that "99% of the cases" of autism were a result of lax parenting. Adding, “They don’t have a father around to tell them: ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life.”
As for what he believes autistic children should be hearing, he said they should be told, “ ‘Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’ ”
Savage's program, Savage Nation, is heard nationally on more than 350 stations.
He did say he would dedicate Monday's segment, from 3pm to 6pm pst, to allow parents to call in and discuss autism.
John Gilmore, executive director of Autism United, says, Savage "characterizes children with autism who are very, very ill — disabled children — as essentially bad kids; the only thing wrong with them is they have parents who don’t discipline them."
He adds, "That completely misrepresents what is going on with children with autism. Basically, what he’s doing is parroting what used to be said about autism 40 years ago, back in the heyday of Freudian analysis. It was blamed on bad parenting. There wasn’t a shred of evidence to support that.”
As for WOR, one of the stations that carries Savages program, they released a statement saying “The views expressed by Michael Savage are his views and are not those of WOR Radio. We regret any consternation that his remarks may have caused to our listeners.”
At least they're trying to cover their asses.
Catherine Lord, a professor and expert on autism, says "Any tendency to blame the children or to think they’re just being bratty if they misbehave perpetuates the myth that autism isn’t a learning disability. It’s a neurobiological condition, just like epilepsy or another medical condition like diabetes or a heart condition. It would be like blaming the child with a heart condition for not being able to exercise.”

As the child of 2 autistic children, both well behaved, I think this man should b taken out in the back of the radio station and shot. Idiots like this are the ones that give the morons who listen to him, the fuel for making wrong judgements about something they no nothing about. While it may be an overdiagnosed condition, autism does exist and its effects can be extremely severe. Those effects are NOT the result of bad parenting.
I do agree though that autism is starting to be overused in that even small symptoms now qualify one for having this condition. However, there are people out there with this condition and it completely interferes with how they interact with others, and it's not because of environment.

As a mother of a brilliant and well behaved autistic son I'd like to challenge his views. His comments show he's uneducated and lacks enough experience with an autistic child to have an opinion. He needs to just go away. Why do stations play someone like this who just spouts off any garbage they want?

As the mother of a child who is on the Autism Spectrum, I am absolutely outraged. This guy obviously has no idea what he is talking about. My child did not speak until he was 2.5 years old, and must attend speech therapy as well as occupational therapy. I don't see what this has to do with the "lack of a father to tell him to stop being an idiot". He has always had a dad. Funny, I don't recall paying a professional $60/hour to "discipline" my son, the professional is there to provide speech and motor skill development…..or maybe I should just tell him to "stop being an idiot". Someone needs to tell Mr. Savage to stop being an idiot. I would pay the $60/hour to see that.
i am a child that grew up with autism,, my parents never told me they had me tested when i was a child, i now see a therapist and know that there are severe effects on my adult life from not knowing my disorder how ever slight my symptoms may be now. this guy needs to be beaten with a stick to within a inch of death so he can empathize with my suffering.

As the mother of an Autistic child, this pisses me off. I am a total hands on parent, I stay home with both my boys and stay active in their school classes and extra activties……poor parenting my ass.

I babysit for a boy with autism and he is wonderful funny and VERY well behaved. Every child is different and it make such broad statements about children with a disease is horrible. This is perpetuating stereotypes including that of refrigerator parents. Not to mention the gender roles he is perpetuating. "be a man, they don't have a father around…" to think that in 2008 someone still thinks this especially a grown man who I am presuming is intelligent enough to read up on autism and get all the facts about it clear before he speaks nationally…. is really sad. Go back to college and take some diversity classes it will change your life.
I love Micheal! I listen to him every afternoon! I do disagree with him on this though…..I believe there are cases of autism that are really disabling, however, most kids nowadays ARE brats who just need a good old fashioned spanking!

I worked specifically with autistic children and trust me, they are loving and amazing kids but have so many problems functioning properly physically and emotionally. Some children on the lower functioning side of the spectrum can't even speak or walk, so how could he possibly say something so ignorant.

As someone who has worked as a para with autistic children, I can say that this guy has obviously never met a child with autism. He obviously has no idea what he's talking about. It is true that individual children may show up differently on the spectrum, and the severity of symptoms may vary, but it is cruel and dangerous to say that it is a behavioral problem. So many children respond positively to treatment.

My brother has autism and having had this disorder in my life for nearly 24 years, I have come to realize that there are always going to be inconsiderate people who will say these sort of things. It IS a terrible disorder that is very VERY real, but my brother has wonderful people in his life who love him very much. I only hope the same for all other who have autism. This man is NOT a doctor, NOT a researcher and NOT educated on this subject AT ALL. Since he clearly does not care what kind of idiotic beliefts he expresses on air, radio stations need to take a stand!

I know someone with an autistic child - somehow their other children were parented properly and don't have autism - this guy is such a joke.
perhaps he is confused and means ADD/ADHD? While some children do suffer from this disorder, it has been supported that the disorder is often misdiagnosed/overdiagnosed, particularly because some ADD sufferers are able to behave differently if offered a reward of some sort, which they would not be able to control were they truly suffering from it. Either way, this is not true of autism and the guy is ignorant no matter if he confused the two or if he actually believes what he says.
