And what a hand off it's going to be!
It was just announced that David Letterman's The Late Show successor will be none other than Stephen Colbert! The Comedy Central staple and Colbert Report creator clearly has some big shoes to fill, but if there is one person who is confident in him — it's Dave! Here's what he had to say about his successor:

But what will happen to The Colbert Report? And the character version of Stephen Colbert that we've come to know and love?
Comedy Central issued a statement today that hinted at the end of the show once Stephen leaves:
"Comedy Central is proud that the incredibly talented Stephen Colbert has been part of our family for nearly two decades. We look forward to the next eight months of the ground-breaking Colbert Report and wish Stephen the very best.”
We're not going to lie (since we're all about truthiness), this news is a little bit sad.
Also, Stephen announced today that we'll also be forced to say goodbye to his satirical, right winged character:

And just like Nostradamus, one special pal of the Comedy Central host predicted the future announcement news!
In an interview with Vulture on Wednesday night, Jon Stewart revealed that Stephen would be perfect for the gig, and really sang his praises:
WOW! This was actually totally unexpected news!!!
Solid choice for sure — but surprising as hell as well!
Does this mean the end of The Colbert Report? What happen with Chelsea Handler? Were there ever even talks with her?
One big question answered, but so many, many to follow!
UPDATE: Stephen has just released a statement, staying:
“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career. never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.”
First, she wants everyone to know that she is clean and sober! Second, her docu-series is not EXACTLY reality. Third, she's taking over the Late Show!

This will definitely live on as one of the Top Ten tributes paid to David Letterman's lasting legacy.
We're all still pretty sad about the announcement of Dave's retirement sometime next year, but he got a pretty great sendoff courtesy of The Simpsons!
Set to the epic Rhapsody in Blue, this variation of the opening sequence to the animated series has Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and the little baby who killed Mr. Burns receiving a chance to be guests on The Late Show and sit on a perhaps even more famous couch.
This gag deserves a huge standing ovation, without the assistance of an applause sign! Best. Couch gag. Ever.
