Ian Somerhalder is a HUGE animal lover to say the least. That's why he started the Ian Somerholder Foundation Animal Sanctuary, a place where animals can well and bullies can learn compassion in his home state of Louisiana.

But unfortunately, his dream may be on the brink of collapse!

Ian Somerhalder is a huge animal lover and champion for environmental causes.

He even started his own foundation, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation which will do anything as long as it helps animals or the environment.

So when there was a new anti-fur initiative, Ian jumped right in.

He tweeted:

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has honored The Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder.

At the HSUS's 26th annual Genesis Awards, he will receive the prestigious Wyler Award.

The Wyler Award is given to a public figure or celebrity for raising awareness of animal issues through their pull in the media.

Ian is specifically being recognized for his use of traditional and social media to advocate for issues such as shark finning, endangered animals, fur and the Canadian seal hunt.

He has even founded the Ian Somerhalder Foudnation, whose goal is to "empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures."

Ian said:

"The tireless efforts of The Humane Society of the United States to protect animals around the world has always been an inspiration to me and I’m honored to be recognized with this year’s Wyler Award."

An HSUS rep said about Somerhalder:

"Ian is the epitome of a new kind of advocate who leverages his fame and an array of media platforms to draw public attention to animal protection concerns and other issues that he cares deeply about.

From addressing Congress to making TV appearances to regularly blogging to informing his million-plus followers on Twitter, Ian is a major voice and force for animals and a most deserving recipient of The Wyler Award."

Ian Somerhalder will be the very first person to receive the "World of Good" award.

The jewelry company, Tiffany, has created the award to be an annual prize honoring "an influential actor, filmmaker or artist who is using their notoriety to ‘do good work.'"

Being an actor and an activist committed to getting youths involved in saving the planet, Somerhalder seemed the perfect recipient.
