Bette Midler found herself in some hot water over the weekend after sending a tweet about Caitlyn Jenner that many found to be “transphobic.”
As you know, last week Caitlyn announced I Am Cait would not be coming back for a season three — and as response, the 70-year-old icon tweeted (and then deleted) on Saturday:
“Now that @IAmCait has been cancelled, will she go back to being Bruce? Will Kris take him back? Do I smell a re-wedding?!”
Well, what might’ve just been a poke at the former Olympian (as Bette often does) — many commenters believed Miz Midler’s tone and use of the word “him” was insensitive to the trans community.

After taking quite a bit of heat, the The First Wives Club star — who has been a longtime friend of the LGBTQ community — fired off an apology of sorts addressed to the Human Rights Campaign:
DEAR FRIENDS @HRC, WHOM I HAVE ALWAYS SUPPORTED. SORRY LAST TWEET OFFENDED. AN IDLE MUSING. I SEEM TO HAVE MISREAD THE TEMPER OF THE TIMES.

And while B.M. offered an apology for being offensive, many people still didn’t think she got the point:
@BetteMidler The issue wasn’t making a joke about Caitlyn Jenner, but in referring to her as “him.” That’s transphobic, about more than her.

So Bette, thanks for the edit. But it’s not about “temper.” Trans lives are hard. We’re not soreheads. We deserve love. @BetteMidler

@BetteMidler @HRC Transphobia was never a “temper of the times”. It’s always been wrong.

Hmmm.
So what do U make of all this, Perezcious readers?? Do U think Bette’s apology was genuine??
