During a recent interview, Harry Potter star and hottie Daniel Radcliffe opened up about a mental disorder affecting his everyday life.
The 19 year-old millionaire admits he often has trouble trying his shoelaces. Try not to chuckle.
No, he’s not “slow.” He just suffers from dyspraxia.
Dyspraxia’s defined as having a specific disorder in the area of your motor skill development and is usually characterized by people having “difficulty planning and completing intended fine motor tasks” or can affect various “areas of functioning, varying from simple motor tasks such as waving goodbye to more complex tasks like brushing teeth.”
Radcliffe jokingly said, “I sometimes think, ‘Why, oh why, has Velcro not taken off?'”
Luckily for Radcliffe, he’s at the “mild” end of the disorder, where it doesn’t affect him enough to impair him.
His rep also confirms the news, adding “Yes, Dan Radcliffe does have dyspraxia. This is something he has never hidden. Thankfully his condition is very mild and at worst manifests itself in an inability to ties his shoe laces and bad handwriting.”
Though Radcliffe does goes on to admit that he originally became an actor because he didn’t exactly excel at school due to his disorder – adding that he “was rubbish at everything at school.”
Neurologist Dr. David Younger, from NYU’s Medical School, says “I├óΓé¼Γäóm a big fan of the whole Harry Potter series and I am surprised Daniel Radcliffe suffers from dyspraxia. In the majority of children and young people with dyspraxia, we cannot find the cause so the basic treatment is occupational therapy ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ teaching them to make a plan for their actions and rehearse their movements. He clearly suffers from a mild form, but the fact he shows no sign of it at all is a great tribute to his acting skills and makes him a role model for other people with this condition.”
We have a feeling most organizations dedicated to dyspraxia are going to be contacting Radcliffe to have Harry Potter as their spokesperson!
