Following her Grammys comeback, Demi Lovato is continuing to dive deep into her emotions.

Sitting down with Andy Cohen on Thursday for his Radio Andy SiriusXM show, the Anyone singer recalled opening up to her parents about her sexual fluidity and more of the aftermath following her near-fatal overdose in July 2018.

Just months before she ended up in the hospital that year, she revealed to InStyle about the possibility of dating women, something she talked to her parents about in 2017. Demi shared with Andy:

“I’m still figuring it out. I didn’t officially tell my parents that I saw myself ending up possibly with a woman until 2017. It was actually emotional, but really beautiful. After everything was done, I was like shaking and crying. I just felt overwhelmed. I have such incredible parents. They were so supportive.”

Considering her lyrics from her 2015 hit Cool for the Summer, she shared her dad wasn’t surprised at all, but it was still a struggle for her to be so candid:

“My mom was the one that I was super nervous about, but she was like, ‘I just want you to be happy.’ And that was so beautiful and amazing. I’m so grateful.”

As we reported last week, the 27-year-old revealed during an interview with Zane Lowe that she hopes to start a family, possibly with “a man or a woman” sometime this decade. She explained her feelings about motherhood further yesterday, saying:

“I don’t know what my future looks like. I don’t know if I’m going to have kids this year or in 10 years. I don’t know if I’m gonna do it with a partner or without, because women don’t need partners. Amen!”

Of course! We never know what the future holds.

In fact, there was one point when Lovato wasn’t even sure she’d ever return to music again. Referencing her moving Grammys performance of Anyone, she spilled:

“Well that song, I knew that it represented that period in my life when everything hit the fan.”

The “period” she’s referring to is her 2018 overdose, as she added the song “represented exactly what I was going through, the vulnerability.”

She continued:

“I also was really proud of the vocal and I thought, ‘I’ve never had a moment like this, you know, where I’ve sat down at a piano or that I’ve stood next to a piano and sang my heart out.”

Dem moved the whole audience to tears!! But the performance that night wasn’t a sure thing when she was sitting in her hospital bed recovering:

“I’ve never had one of those moments on an awards show, and I thought, ‘you know, if I ever come back from this’ — because I was still in the hospital and I didn’t know — and I thought, ‘if I ever come back from this, I end up going back to music and I’m on stage and I get a first performance, I want it to be at the Grammys and I want it to be this song.'”

The songstress “absolutely” wasn’t sure at the time if her singing career was something she wanted to return to.

“I think as time goes on, I’ll be able to give more information or more details and things like that, but just in a general, it was a general thought. We didn’t know what was going to happen. We didn’t know how healthy I’d be when I left, it was a scary time in my life for sure.”

It sounds like that time in her life is still a fresh wound, but we have faith that she will heal.
