It’s hard to believe it’s been over a decade since Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey called it quits on their marriage. However, it appears as though those who worked on the former flames’ MTV show, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, saw warning signs about the pair’s doomed relationship.

Thankfully, a producer for the early ’00s hit is now opening up about what it was like to work with Nick and Jessica. Oooh, go on!
For an interview with Complex, Sue Kolinsky got VVV candid about her time as a producer for all three seasons of Newlyweds. On what it was like filming the show’s final season (which aired just before the pop stars’ high profile divorce), the industry vet dished:
“You could feel there was tension between the two of them… They were very different people. He was a blue-collar guy ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ he did a lot of things himself, like he and his brother [Drew Lachey] would build things. He was frugal, and she had excessive taste.”
Makes sense. Don’t forget, Jessica was only 22 when she wed the 98 Degrees alum. In regards to the demise of Nick and Jessica’s marriage, Sue continued:
“In the end they weren’t suited for each other. The only thing they really had in common was their music. She was really young. ├óΓé¼┬ª He wanted a family, and her father thought maybe she was too young. Her father was very involved in her life.”
Joe Simpson?? ~Shocker.~
Although, Kolinsky had “no idea” who the blonde pop princess was before agreeing to be the program’s producer. Nonetheless, once she saw footage of Simpson’s infamous “chicken or fish” query, she knew they had reality TV gold. After defending that the Lacheys’ show was reality TV “at its purest form,” the producer explained:
“As soon as we started looking at the footage and I saw the ├óΓé¼╦£Is this chicken or fish?’ [scene], I knew it was going to be a really fun ride… [Nick & Jessica] were perfect because they were polar opposites. They were beautiful, and without even realizing it, they were very funny.”
Don’t even get Sue started on the reality of Jessica’s “dumb blonde” persona. On Ashlee Simpson‘s sister’s intelligence, Kolinsky admitted:
“There were times when we were like, ├óΓé¼╦£Hm, does she really not know what this means?’ I truly believe the whole ├óΓé¼╦£chicken & fish’ situation was accurate. She really did not know… I remember there was a scene where there was a dead mouse by their pool and it had been dead for a while. Nick said, ├óΓé¼╦£it’s in rigor mortis’ and Jessica said, ├óΓé¼╦£Riga-what?’ I truly believe she didn’t know what that meant.”
OMG. We’re dying.
