Actually, we are a little surprised…
Surprised it took them this long to say anything! We’ve all known about this for weeks! Get on your game, people!
The Parents Television Council has released a statement his afternoon via the organizations president, stating their disgusted opinion of Glee’s decision to air two sex-scenes during tonight’s episode titled The First Time. Ironically, their taking issue with the scenes not because one couple is gay, but because of the ages of the characters. PTC president Tim Winter explains:
├óΓé¼┼ôThe fact that Glee intends to not only broadcast, but celebrate children having sex is reprehensible. The gender of the high school characters involved is irrelevant. Teen sex is now more prevalent on TV than adult sex and Glee is only playing into that trend. Research proves that television is a teen sexual super peer that can, and likely will, influence a teen├óΓé¼Γäós decision to become sexually active. Fox knows the show inherently attracts kids; celebrating teen sex constitutes gross recklessness … Few parents realize the creator of Glee [Ryan Murphy] also demonstrated his taste for the depths of depravity in creating [FX’s] Nip/Tuck, a program in which no taboo was too extreme to violate. In fact, he stated publicly that his legacy may be to make possible a rear-entry scene on broadcast television. If past behavior is any indicator, parents can expect Glee to continue down this dangerous path.├óΓé¼┬¥
First of all, let’s give Ryan Murphy and the FCC a little bit of credit here. No way are they going to let a “rear-entry scene” make it into the cut of this show. We are still talking about network primetime here. When (and we do say when) it happens, it will be on a show like Nip/Tuck or American Horror Story. Not because of the age of their characters mind you, but because cable is just that much more open to widening the gap of “acceptable” content these days.
Now, as to their first point about it being “reprehensible” to show teens having sex. What we find even more reprehensible is that groups like this want to keep kids in the dark about sex until it is much too late. The nice thing about Glee is that it reaches that core demographic on a level that is honest, real and above all, responsible. Have we all forgotten about Quinn and her teen pregnancy? Did we all forget how delicately and honestly that was handled (minus that one freaky, lamaze dance to It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.) And these aren’t just strangers hooking up. These are kids who are in love and from what we here, spend the majority of the episode seriously weighing their options before they go through with the deed.
So to PTC we say, back off! Watch the episode. Watch with your teen! Maybe you both will learn a little something. Maybe it will open a dialogue that your kid has been too afraid to ask you about. See this for the good thing that it could be.
