Diane Keaton, Rob Reiner, Catherine O’Hara, and others may be gone, but they’ll never be forgotten.
During the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, Billy Crystal took the stage to honor his longtime friends Rob and Michele Reiner. He reflected on meeting the beloved director in 1975 in an episode of All in the Family before highlighting some of his most notable films: This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery, and more. Such an incredible legacy. Billy also recognized Rob and Michele for their unwavering commitment to fighting social injustice, including their campaign for marriage equality in the United States.
“Their loss is immeasurable.”

The Reiner segment concluded with several actors from Rob’s most notable films emerging on the stage and interlocking hands. Watch (below):
Rachel McAdams also took the stage to uplift several other major players who sadly lost their lives within the past year: Claudia Cardinale, Diane Ladd, Catherine O’Hara, and of course, Diane Keaton:
“For over 50 years, luminous on screen and indelible in life, believe me when I say there isn’t an actress of my generation who is not inspired by and enthralled with her absolute singularity.”
She went on to recite an old song Diane would often sing on set:
“Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver, the other is gold. A circle is round, it has no end. That’s how long I will be your friend.
So beautiful and so Diane. Watch the full segment (below):
So incredibly moving.
Barbra Streisand then took the Dolby Theatre stage to honor Robert Redford:
“I called him an intellectual cowboy who blazed his own trail and won the Academy Award for best director. Bob had real backbone on and off the screen.”
She concluded the segment by singing some of The Way We Were from her and Robert’s 1973 romance of the same name. She added:
“I miss him now more than ever, even though he loved teasing me.”
So beautifully done — and with so much love. ![]()
