Since the very beginning of the search for Nancy Guthrie, the Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has insisted the Tucson community wasn’t in danger. But now? We’re more than a month out from the night the 84-year-old vanished — and he’s changing his tune!
Nanos has hardly been talking to the press, but he did a rare interview with NBC News on Thursday night. He made a startling revelation when asked if he thinks the “suspect could strike again.” In no uncertain terms, he said:
“Absolutely.”

Nanos went on to claim that investigators strongly believe they know why the suspect did what he did — and that until he’s caught, nobody should let their guard down! He explained:
“We believe we know why he did this, and we believe that it was targeted, but we, we can’t, we’re not 100% sure of that. So it’d be silly to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry about it. You’re, you’re not his target.’ Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No, keep your wits about you.”
Uhhh… isn’t that something that would’ve been good to tell everyone in the immediate aftermath of the alleged kidnapping?! We get not wanting to unnecessarily scare people, but wouldn’t this have been good to remind people about sooner?
But also, if it was targeted, why do they think the suspect could strike again? What was he after?? Hmm.
As for what they think the motive is, well, the controversial official didn’t have anything to offer. When questioned if there’s some evidence that has emerged amid the investigation that’s given authorities a sense of motive, Nanos shared:
“You know, I think it’s come out from day one. I think from day one we had some strong beliefs about what happened, and those beliefs haven’t diminished.”
So, was it a burglary gone wrong, a theory many have wondered about? In classic fashion, the Sheriff said:
“I’m not gonna get into those theories. We have our beliefs. Everybody else has theirs.”
He told the outlet he was “intentionally withholding their theory and other details in the case, citing the integrity of the investigation.” Understandable… We just hope they’re really onto something!

Our fingers are crossed that authorities will uncover answers sooner rather than later, and that nobody else will be harmed by this suspect!
