Philadelphia Flyer Calls Sean Avery Offensive Gay Slur During Game

Ugh! When are athletes going to learn that people may not be able to hear them, but they can ALWAYS read their lips!
In yet another example of homophobia in sports, a player on the Philadelphia Flyers, Wayne Simmonds, called New York Ranger Sean Avery a “f*cking f*ggot” during a televised preseason game.
Apparently the two had a scuffle beforehand, like we’ve come to expect from hockey, but was an offensive homophobic slur really necessary?
Although inaudible on television, it is fairly easy to read his lips and distinguish what words were used.
Sean, who openly supported gay marriage in New York, confirmed after the game that the F-bomb was dropped during the exchange and added:

“I mean Kobe got fined 100 grand. Everything is different now. You know, it├óΓé¼Γäós an issue. It is an issue that people are dealing with and trying to overcome. And I guess ten years ago, maybe it was not such an issue. But it is such an issue politically with people in the game and just in life in general.”

When asked if the slur was intended to be related to his support for gay marriage, the NHL star answered:

“I mean, it has been said. It has been said for years. Whether I thought about it in that sense, I don’t know.”

In a separate interview, the Philly Flyer in question was careful to cover his tracks and said he “can’t recall every single word” he used during the argument, explaining:

“Honestly, we were going back and forth for awhile there and I don’t recall every single thing I said to him, but he said some things I didn’t like and I said some things he didn’t like. But, I can’t recall every single word I said.”

Unfortunately for anyone watching who may have been offended by his language, they can “recall” exactly what he said!
When Kobe Bryant let the same slur fly during an NBA game, he was promptly fined $100,000!
Although Sean made the easy comparison, he says it’s up to the National Hockey League to decide on a punishment, if any, saying:

“That├óΓé¼Γäós something that I├óΓé¼Γäóm not really going to comment on. First of all, me commenting on things like that, the backlash that I could receive is unknown and I don├óΓé¼Γäót want to put the team in a situation where they would have to deal with something because of me wanting to see something happen. So, I├óΓé¼Γäóm not going to get into it.├óΓé¼┬¥

We agree with everything Sean said and think this kind of language is simply UNACCEPTABLE in sports! Not only is it unsportsmanlike conduct, but it sets a poor example for anyone watching the TELEVISED match!
Athletes need to wake up and realize they are role models for young fans, whether they want to be or not!
Check out the short clip above to see what we’re talking about and let us know if U think Wayne Simmonds should be fined!
