Rihanna's AMA "Doobie" Hair Explained By Her Hairstylist!!

Rihanna's hairstylist dishes details behind her unusual AMAs hairstyle!
Rihanna is not only a music icon, she’s an all-around icon — and now she has a pyramid-shaped trophy to prove it!!
So when she accepted her Icon Award at this year’s AMAs sporting an unusual hairstyle, it had the whole beauty world abuzz!
Rih rocked what is called a “doobie” or “wrap” on her dome, which is basically created by wrapping hair around the cranium and then pinning it in place. The style is mainly used in African American and Latina cultures to preserve straightened hair, so until recently was contained to the home or hair salon.
Some critiqued RiRi for the ‘do, saying it should be kept in the bedroom, while others adored it and want to see it tried on different celebs!
But while Rihanna probs doesn’t care what anyone thinks, her hairstylist Ursula Stephen took the time to delve into her hair-iffic inspiration.
Here are the HIGHlights:

On whose idea was it for Rihanna to wear a doobie wrap:
It was actually Rihanna’s idea. She had her mind made up! Honestly, I was a little hesitant but I knew she could pull it off, so I was all for it.
On the overwhelming reaction:
I knew it would get a reaction but I wasn’t sure if it would be positive or negative. A doobie on the red carpet has never been done before so I knew it could have gone either way.
On foreseeing the wrap, worn outside the home/salon, becoming a universal trend:
Sure. I mean, it’s already been done. I see girls on the street rocking them all the time shopping, eating, etc. It’s just never been seen in a formal setting.
On the statement Rihanna was trying to make?
It was a nod to fashion! This is a style that can be worn by some of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood.
On the wrap’s ’30s roots, and what the bobby pins added:
Yes, the ’30s were all about [the wrap]! The pins helped to elevate the look from just your average doobie.
On backlash from some members of the African-American and Latina community, who feel the wrap should be relegated to the bedroom:
Everyone has an opinion. However, the doobie has been worn to Bergdorf Goodman. They just haven’t been paying attention. And it’s been around since the ’30s. Part of my job is to know eras, trends and fashion, and to keep looks alive by adding a modern twist.
On goals to push the envelope further with Rihanna’s looks, and what groundbreaking styles are coming next:
As an artist, you can’t take yourself too seriously. It’s about evolving, having fun, feeling beautiful and letting the look interpret the feeling, mood and the music! I feel like we have done everything. However, there is a mental list of “looks,” not styles, that we want to try. More iconic sh*t is on the list.

We’re amazed there are even styles left to try considering the frequency at which Rihanna changes her hair, but we obvi can’t WAIT to see what’s in store!!
We’ll have more of that “iconic sh*t”, please!
