Whitney Houston's Alleged Lesbian Lover Spills All About Their 'Physical' Relationship: 'I Know She Loved Me'

Whitney Houston had somebody who loved her in the early ‘80s — and that someone was her longtime friend, Robyn Crawford.

New deets about the rumored same-sex relationship between the late superstar and her gal pal are being revealed in Crawford’s new memoir, A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston, in which she claims they were romantic partners right before the singer’s career took off.

She writes in the book:

“We wanted to be together, and that meant just us.”

But it appears their relationship was eventually thwarted by queer shame on Whitney’s part.

According to Crawford, the I Wanna Dance With Somebody singer shut down the physical aspect of their relationship in 1982 — and gifted her a bible while breaking the news to her.

Crawford writes:

“She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore, because it would make our journey even more difficult. She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us, and back in the ’80s that’s how it felt.”

Thankfully, the world is much kinder to sexually fluid pop stars these days — but back then, it was a different story.

Not only was Whitney frightened by society’s potential reaction to this lesbian relationship, Crawfrord writes, her mother Cissy Houston was very much against their romance.

The author said:

“Whitney told me her mother said it wasn’t natural for two women to be that close, but we were that close.”

Crawford went on to note she and Whitney “never talked about labels,” but added:

“Whitney knows I loved her and I know she loved me. We really meant everything to each other. We vowed to stand by each other.”

Love is love. It’s just so devastating to think about how different Whitney’s life could have been if she allowed this (alleged) love to flourish. (As fans know, the star struggled with drug use and died in 2012 at the age of 48.)

Interestingly enough, the Grammy winner’s ex-husband, Bobby Brown, shared the same sentiments in his 2016 memoir, Every Little Step: My Story, in which he confirmed his ex had a relationship with Crawford. He previously told Us Weekly:

“I really feel that if Robyn was accepted into Whitney’s life, Whitney would still be alive today. She didn’t have close friends with her anymore.”

Whitney’s gospel singer mother, for her part, hasn’t appeared to have evolved her thinking — at least not as of 2013, when she appeared on an episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter and admitted she “absolutely” would’ve had a problem with her daughter being gay.

One could only guess how Cissy feels about Crawford’s memoir, but other members of the family have been vocally supportive. When Whitney’s sister-in-law, Pat Houston, spoke about the book last month, she told ET:

“She’s entitled. If she wants to write a book, who knows what the book is about? It’s her story… Is it fair to say she can’t write a book? No, it isn’t. She had a relationship with her, so whatever it was, you know, she’s deciding to write a book. Hey, she can do that.”

Well, she did that. A Song For You hits shelves on November 12.
