Medical Schools Aren't Teaching Students About LGBT Health Issues

Medical school

Boo!

A new survey has revealed that medical schools are NOT teaching their students (the future of medicine) about properly caring for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals.

After speaking to medical school deans in the U.S. and Canada, it was revealed that schools spent an average of FIVE HOURS teaching LGBT-related content. 33% of schools provided no instruction related to LGBT medical care during the student's clinical years, and even worse, nearly 4% did not provide any AT ALL!

Hector Vargas, executive director of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, said:

"This survey confirms what we have said all along: Health professional training schools in general do not adequately address LGBT health needs."

Despite the shockingly LOW amount of time (if any at all) spent educating students on specific medical issues affecting the LGBT community, 44% of the deans surveyed somehow thought coverage of LGBT content at their school was "fair" overall, while 26% said it was "very poor."

The study authors called their findings "shocking" because they THOUGHT "in medical education, we strive for excellence."

We hope this survey will open some eyes in the medical community and inspire some MUCH NEEDED change in curriculum.

LGBT Community FINALLY Included In Major Medical Survey!

pride flag

Last April we were concerned to hear that the LGBT community was being ignored by medical research. In effect, a report discovered those in the medical field are largely uneducated on understanding sexual orientation development, gender identity, the impact of stigma, and discrimination on health.

Today we are happy to announce that for the first time EVER lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender populations will be INCLUDED in the National Health Interview Survey, which is a "principal source" used to gauge the health of Americans.

Such awesome news!

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced the plan to include questions on sexual orientation on the survey by 2013 in hopes of better understanding gender identity. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement:

"Today we are taking critical steps toward ensuring the useful national data on minority groups, including, for the first time, LGBT populations. The data we will eventually collect in these efforts will serve as powerful tools and help us in our fight to end health disparities."

Not only will this information provide health benefits, but the inclusion of the LGBT community in medical surveys breaks down a major barrier that has existed in the medical community for years.

Lesbian Couple Scolded For Kissing At Baseball Game

LAME!!

A lesbian couple, Taylor Campione, and Kelsi Culpepper, was called out and scolded at a Minnesota Twins game for briefly kissing each other.

The security guard reportedly said, "We don't play grab ass here," and that they must "adhere to the 10 Commandments."

Kevin Smith, a spokesperson for the team said that the guard has been given a verbal and written reprimand, but will not be let go. Smith said the guard has been working with the Twins for almost 10 years and has a clear record other than this incident.

The couple is filing a complaint with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights asking for a zero-tolerance policy to be instituted at the field.

We agree. There is no room in society for intolerance!!

Well, we guess this one looks a whole lot more professional than her last foray!

Then again, there's nothing that professional about taking it up the booty or having lesbian threesomes, but she certainly does look like she's enjoying herself, so hey!

Whatever works, gurl!

Think B4 You Speak LGBT Slurs On The Basketball Court!

Using the word "gay" to imply dumb or stupid isn't cool and this PSA proves it.

The NBA has teamed up with the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network to speak out against homophobia on the court.

If you think using the word "gay" (or any other variation) is an acceptable means of trash talking, you need to go back to school and get a little more creative!

Check out what basketball players Grant Hill and Jared Dudley have to say about it above!
