We’re in the golden age of television — but why watch yet ANOTHER singing competition or ANOTHER rebooted program that was shot dead years ago when you can watch both!?
That’s the conundrum Twitter found itself in after tuning into American Idol Sunday night, where reactions varied from pleasantly surprised to “it’s a no from me, dawg.”
While a number of viewers felt the show’s absence of Simon Cowell eyerolls and hilariously bad auditions wasn’t worth their time, others were sold on the telegenic chemistry between judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan.

And although 2018 Idol didn’t feature any so-bad-they’re-William Hung auditioners, the premiere still gave Miz Perry an opportunity to unleash her inner Simon and crush some dreams!
What did YOU think of the Idol reboot? Ch-ch-check out some clips and reactions (below) and cast your votes!
We’ll start with the good:
LOVING the new feel-good @AmericanIdol on ABC. In a world that’s more divisive than ever, we’re reminded of the humanity in all of us; we’re given a fresh lesson in acceptance – that everyone has a story, and while the dreams we dream are free, the hustle isn’t. #AmericanIdol

I’ve concluded that trying not to be moved in any way by @AmericanIdol is like trying to deny that puppies are cute even though they’re shitting on your rug right in front of you. Despite the commercialism, at it’s core its a show about possibilities. We need that. ✊️🇺🇸✌️👏

American idol will always be better than the voice

How can the average American Idol viewer watch this and not fall in love with Katy’s personality?! #AmericanIdol

Katy Perry’s odd sense of humor actually works pretty well for American Idol

Katy: “What do people normally say about your singing”
Kobe: “I should try out for American Idol”

Bad news for Koby:
this guy on American Idol walked in and said wig, and he wants to buy an alpaca if he wins. he’s already won in my book. #AmericanIdol

Oh, you mean fan fave Noah Davis? Watch his wig-tastic audition (below):
Of course, not everyone gave the reboot a golden ticket to Hollywood…
Oh man American Idol is 5 minutes in and completely unwatchable

The way American Idol is going so far I think there’s a chance it’ll be cancelled before next week

I nearly dozed off while watching the reboot of American Idol. This is just painful to watch. Persida Acosta’s theatrics and Larry Gadon’s antics are far more entertaining.

I won├óΓé¼Γäót be watching American idol. There r so many talent shows that r so much better… your time has come and gone ├░┼╕┬ñ┬╖├óΓé¼┬ì├óΓäóΓé¼├»┬╕┬Å├░┼╕┬ñ┬╖├óΓé¼┬ì├óΓäóΓé¼├»┬╕┬Å & it will never be the same without Simon. Sorry ├░┼╕╦£┬É
— Cortney Carrion (@KortKneee_Rae) March 12, 2018
Luke Bryan just accidentally called Kristin Chenoweth “Christian Chenoweth” on American Idol, and I├óΓé¼Γäóm pretty sure that├óΓé¼Γäós a hate crime

Why can’t American Idol be like the old days where Simon just roasted everyone ├░┼╕╦£┬¬
— al (@alyson_lopez) March 12, 2018
The new American Idol judges seriously told contestants who weren├óΓé¼Γäót good to “try Broadway?” Yes, because everyone knows the best singers are pop stars and the worst singers are on Broadway. LOL.
