It’s hard to deny that gun violence and shootings seem to be increasing in frequency — especially after the shootings in San Bernadino and the recent attack in Orlando.
Sadly, Chicago, IL knows this violence all too well as they aren’t particularly known for having the safest neighborhoods. To make matters worse, the city had quite the tragic weekend after several people died due to gun violence.

From the span of last Friday night to early Monday morning, several people were killed across the city leaving at least 35 others wounded — including a 5-year-old girl!
The first incident occurred around 8 p.m. on Friday in the Marquette Park neighborhood and the victims were a 5-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman! Apparently, the two were walking around the 6700 block of South Artesian when someone walked out of a nearby alley and opened fire which struck the child in the foot and hit the woman in the left ankle. Thankfully, the woman was able to transport them to a hospital where both were considered to be in good condition.
The weekend only got worse from there though as the first reported fatal shooting happened around 8:45 p.m. when Terry Bates Jr. and a 27-year-old man were shot near the 200 block of West Garfield. It’s said that two men walked up to them and opened fire before running away. Bates was pronounced dead only a couple of hours later and the other man suffered chest and leg wounds.

The tragic events continued when Jeremy H. Ray, who was only 27-years-old, was shot to death in a South Chicago neighborhood. Jeremy was hanging out at the 8900 block of South Brandon around 9:35 p.m. when two gunmen reportedly got out of a car and proceeded to open fire on Ray before taking off. Tragically, the young man was pronounced as dead only an hour after he arrived at the hospital.
The shootings continued throughout the weekend as Dwayne T. Triplett, Antwon Brooks, Christopher Fields, Travell Montgomery, as well as an unidentified 34-year-old man all lost their lives due to this bout of violence.
What’s extremely shocking is that all of these murders took place between 8 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday — never mind the 35 injured as a result of gun violence!
We can’t even begin to imagine what any of the victims or their loved ones are going through and our hearts go out to all of those affected during this extremely troubling time.
