Colin Kaepernick Takes A Knee For TIME Magazine -- Get Your First Look At The Controversial Cover & Essay!

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick caused a lot of controversy when he protested the national anthem during NFL games by not standing.
A month later, the conversation isn’t dying down as the athlete has landed on TIME Magazine’s cover (above)!

There’s been a lot of talk about the 28-year-old’s actions since he first kneeled, but on Thursday TIME took to Twitter to announce the athlete will grace the cover of their mag next month!
The established publication tweeted out:

The issue won’t hit stands until October 3, but will include a few different stories about Kaepernick and other players who’ve joined in the protest as one essay written by Jim McWhorter is titled “Colin Kaepernick Had No Choice But To Kneel”.

In the piece, McWhorter, a professor of English and comparative literature at Columbia University, writes:

The idea that Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand during the national anthem is unpatriotic fails doubly: first, in a mistaken notion of what real patriotism is, and second in missing a larger point.

Jim continues:

“We must understand what Kaepernick is protesting. The tension between black people and the cops is not just one more race issue roiling the nation: it is the key one. It is the central cause of black people’s sense of general alienation, the first thing that comes up when you ask black people why they think racism defines their lives. It was what the Panthers were all about, what gangsta rap was all about, what the O.J. Simpson vigilante-justice verdict was all about, and it’s no accident that today’s most prominent civil rights effort, Black Lives Matter, began as a protest against the cops. The sense of the cops’ authority as illegitimate only makes it easier for underserved black men to seek employment on the black market of drug sales. The cop issue helps destroy black communities.”

Regardless of where you stand on this issue, it’s certainly a good read and it’s always important to hear both sides of any argument!
