Less than two months ago, the GOP passed a $1.5 trillion tax cut in which billionaires get the vast majority of benefits, while the majority of middle class get something like $18/week.
Oh, and those in poverty got nothing at all.
Now in their latest bid at cartoon supervillainy they’re aiming to save some money where? By cutting FOOD STAMPS!

The Donald Trump administration’s latest “eff you” to the poor is a proposal that replaces around half of the country’s food stamp benefits (about 81% of those participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), in which they can choose which foods they buy, with a box of food sent right to their home.
White House budget director Mick Mulvaney compared the idea to Blue Apron, the meal-kit delivery service that sends subscribers gourmet recipes and ingredients.
Something tells us the ingredients — which would consist of “shelf-stable” items like juice, pasta, canned meat, and beans — would be a bit less fancy than “Salmon and Dukkah-Spiced Vegetables with Orange and Endive.”
Remember when Republicans were against government overreach? Like when they canceled Michelle Obama‘s healthy school lunch program last year because it tried to tell people what food give their kids?
But now it’s fine to tell people what to eat. Huh.

In any case, according to some critics the new program wouldn’t even end up saving money after all!
FMI chief public policy officer Jennifer Hatcher explained:
“Perhaps this proposal would save money in one account, but based on our decades of experience in the program, it would increase costs in other areas that would negate any savings.”
One group that would be upset by the new plan (one that isn’t poor people or those with empathy for them we mean — one that Trump might actually listen to) is big supermarkets.
For instance, this could end up costing stores like Walmart, which apparently gets 20% of food stamp sales currently, billions in revenue. Walmart is also one of the biggest employers in the country, so if they have to lay off tons of workers, guess who’s going to sign up for food stamps?
Eesh.
