Curator Nancy Spector told officials that in lieu of the prized painting, which was unavailable due to a scheduled display at the Guggenheim in Spain, the museum could offer a shiney shitter from its collection.
Per The Washington Post, she wrote in an email to the White House:
“We are sorry not to be able to accommodate your original request, but remain hopeful that this special offer may be of interest.”
A special offer, indeed. The 18-karat toilet is *fully functioning* and even used as a temporary interactive exhibit in one of the museum’s bathrooms!

In the email, Spector added that Maurizio Cattelan, the artist who created the piece, aptly titled America, offered it to the White House “for a long-term loan.”
When asked why he offered his toilet, which has been described as satire mocking excessive wealth, to the Trumps, Cattelan told The Post:
“It’s a very delicate subject├óΓé¼┬ª What’s the point of our life? Everything seems absurd until we die and then it makes sense.”
