To mark the end of the worst week in school history, Penn State University’s football team lost to Nebraska at home on Saturday.
Despite the loss and circumstances following the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal, fan’s spirits were high as many wore dark blue in support of the victims.
Even though students painted their chest, held signs and cheered for their beloved “Joe Pa”, the student section formed the outline of a blue ribbon in the stands to honor the children abused by the former defensive coordinator.
After both teams kneeled to hold a moment of silence before the start of the game, the university’s new president, Rodney Erickson, gave a heartfelt video statement in the first quarter, saying:
“This has been one of the saddest weeks in the history of Penn State and my heart goes out to those who have been victimized. I share your anger and sorrow. Although we can’t go back to business as usual, our university must move forward. We are a community.”
Although our hearts are first and foremost with the victims of the tragic scandal, we realize Penn State’s students were also affected and are now tasked with moving forward after their University’s reputation was forever tarnished.
