A species of salmon believed to have been extinct for 70 years has been found in Japan!
The Kokanee Salmon or “Kunimasu” was discovered in Lake Saiko, Japan near Mount Fuji!
The fish was thought to have died out in 1940, when a hydroelectric project made its native lake in northern Akita Prefecture more acidic, but a science professor has found the species alive and well!
Great news!
Professor Tetsuji Nakabo, who found the fish with his team of researchers, said:
“I was really surprised. This is a very interesting fish ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ it’s a treasure. We have to protect it and not let it disappear again.”
The professor says if the current enviroment is maintained, the lake has sufficient kunimasu for the species to survive!
