For the past three years, the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood has made a list of their Worst Toys of the Year, and awarded the dreaded TOADY (Toys Oppressive And Destructive to Young Children).
Whether a toy is promoting violence, sex, branded entertainment or shunning a child’s creativity, you better believe it’s on this list.
So here are the top 5 worst toys of 2011. Just keep walking when you see the following products at the store.
5.) Monopoly – Coca Cola 125th Anniversary Collector’s Edition
– Why not just buy the regular Monopoly game? Who would want to buy their child a game that clearly promotes an unhealthy soft drink?? Not cool.
4. WWE Colossal Crashdown Arena
– The WWE game promotes bullying, violence, homophobia, and misogyny. And so does this game. Boooo.
3. Monster High Ghoul Spirit Fearleading Doll 3-Pack: Draculaura, Cleo de Nile and Gholia Yelps
– These are scary looking dolls. Why? Not because they’re modeled after classic monsters, but because the dolls are created to be freakishly thin and wear micro-mini-skirts and booty shorts. Weird.
2. I Am T-Pain Mic
– Okay this one is actually pretty cool. Buuuuuut, it is a toy modeled after a rapper who sings songs like I’m in Love with a Stripper and Take Your Shirt Off. Probably not the best idea….
1. Vinci Touchscreen Mobile Learning Tablet
– A learning tablet seems like a good idea, right? Wrong! This particular tablet makes a lot of bogus educational claims when all it really does is turn your child into a zombie. So much for showing off your child’s creativity!
Skip these products and try to find toys and games that promote healthy living, creativity, and equality. Or just give socks to your kids this Christmas. Actually, don’t do that. They’ll hate you forever.
