“You come in here, daddy, and bust up this chifforobe, and I’ll watch The Purple Rose of Cairo.” — Dylan Farrow, basically according to Alec Baldwin.
We don’t remember To Kill a Mockingbird going exactly like that, BUT the veteran actor and longtime Woody Allen collaborator continued to defend the embattled director on Sunday by comparing Dylan to Mayella Ewell, the iconic character who falsely accused a black man of rape.
Last week, Baldwin cast doubt on the activist’s claims that her filmmaker father molested her as a child. In response to other Allen collaborators renouncing the director and his work, Baldwin tweeted that it would be “unfair and sad” for him to do the same when Dylan’s claims were viewed by doctors as inconsistent and “rehearsed” in the initial 1993 investigation.

Baldwin doubled down on his stance over the weekend, tweeting that, unlike others, he’s going to need a lot more than an emotional #MeToo interview to suddenly buy Dylan’s story.
After claiming Dylan’s tears were weapons to “shame” viewers into believing her, Baldwin reminded his followers that her brother Moses Farrow claimed the abuse allegations were false. He postulated:
1 of the most effective things Dylan Farrow has in her arsenal is the “persistence of emotion.” Like Mayella in TKAM, her tears/exhortations r meant 2 shame u in2 belief in her story.
But I need more than that before I destroy some1, regardless of their fame.

Damn. He’s not pulling any punches!
Sure, it’s kind of admirable that Baldwin isn’t just blindly turning over and throwing Allen under the Time’s Up bus without proof. But just like the prosecution in TKAM, he’s glossing over some key evidence — as Dylan claimed in response to the comments on Sunday.

Not only did she reference the “selected bits” of evidence reviewed in her case against her adoptive father, Dylan gave Baldwin a much needed lesson in the backstory of the character he used against her, telling The Hollywood Reporter:
“It’s interesting that Mr. Baldwin chooses to dismiss the judgments of Justice Wilk and Prosecutor Frank Maco, who reviewed ALL of the evidence instead of just selected bits and pieces. However, considering that Mr. Baldwin confidently invoked Mayella Ewell to make his point while forgetting that it’s been hotly debated that she was, in fact, raped by her father, demonstrates that perhaps Baldwin is just not a stickler for details.”
Baldwin, for the record, has previously said sexual abuse complaints should never be dismissed, but warned that accusations should also be “treated carefully.” His defense of Allen on Sunday capped off on a bitter note, as he tweeted:
If my defense of Woody Allen offends you, it’s real simple.

This is a case that’s unfortunately only getting stickier. But we have faith that, just like in Harper Lee‘s classic work of literature, the truth will eventually come out.
