Wasn’t the point of American Idol to find the diamond in the rough? The person out there with just a dream and a voice, who had no other way to get heard?
That’s what a lot of viewers are grumbling after seeing an audition by someone who has another really obvious foot in the door of the music industry…
Sunday night’s episode introduced fans to Lola, a 19-year-0ld who wants to be a star. But she didn’t come alone! She brought her mom and her aunt, too! Carnie Wilson and Wendy Wilson… aka the Wilson in the classic ’90s girl group Wilson Phillips!
Lola even brought out her mom and aunt to perform a little of their smash hit Hold On for the judges before she did her own audition, a cover of Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves. We mean… Wow.

Did it make a difference to the judges? It certainly had them sitting up and listening close! Just watch!
All three judges had some criticism… but were ultimately YES votes to go through to the next round. Was it because of her famous family? Carrie Underwood said it makes her “really excited to get to potentially bear witness to” her rise. Pretty clear she meant she was excited to potentially see another generation of Wilsons become a star, right?
The whole thing felt totally unfair to a lot of viewers, who blasted the show for giving a spot from some unknown hopeful to another nepo baby! Here are just a few comments we saw around the internet:
“Why exactly does a music nepo baby need American Idol? I don’t doubt she can sing but I’m sure getting a record contract wouldn’t be hard with her connections anyway.”
“I am super salty about the celebrity kids showing up with their parents to audition for American Idol this season… These are the definition of nepo baby because it is expected they will go through & they are using their parents influence #IDOL”
“She’s needing more time to cook before she’s at the level for American Idol. Nepo baby with no breath support and she was flat frequently. Seems unfair to take a spot from someone better who doesn’t have famous parents”
“I’m watching American Idol and why are nepo babies auditioning for this show?!?!?! Use your resources as a nepo baby!!!!”
“why are you, a nepo baby, auditioning for american idol”
“She’s ones from a line of amazing singers. However, This is the perfect example of someone who is an average singer using their connection to help them. Maybe she has more to offer but I wasn’t as wowed as I have been with other singers.”
“I have nothing against that sweet young woman, but, there is no way she would have made it through without her famous Mom in tow”
This isn’t even close to the first time! Idol had on Backstreet Boys singer Brian Littrell‘s son two weeks ago, with Dad for support. Spoiler: he made it through also. They’ll follow in the footsteps of Aretha Franklin‘s daughter making the top 10 in Season 20, as well as the children of a Red Hot Chili Pepper, a Doobie Brother, a Eurythmic, and more competing in the past couple years.
Should these “nepo baby” singers be allowed? We mean, don’t they already have another path to the music industry? Just ask Mom and Aunt Wendy! See, the Wilson sisters are the daughters of Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys and Chynna Phillips is the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips — half of iconic folk group The Mamas & The Papas.
That’s right. Wilson Phillips are a pretty classic nepo baby example. Folks can debate how fair it was for them to have the edge they had back then… but this? This seems pretty damned cut and dry. Lola, while having a nice voice, is pretty clearly getting a boost from her famous fam being there.
What do YOU think of Idol‘s nepo baby craze??
