Food Network star Anne Burrell was doing something she loved just hours before her death.
The accomplished chef died on Tuesday morning, likely due to cardiac arrest, according to a 911 caller. She was just 55. A truly sad and unexpected loss — and no one, not even those who saw her right before, saw it coming.
On Monday night, just hours before she passed away, the Worst Cooks in America host was performing in an improv show at The Second City New York in Brooklyn. The show capped off a course she was taking on improv, something she had so much fun with. A source told People on Wednesday:
“Everyone said she was so great last night and so happy.”

Another source who was with her at the show agreed, saying:
“[Anne] was in great spirits last night during and after the improve show. Typical fun, outgoing Anne, having a blast.”
The source added that everyone is “shocked and confused” because she seemed fine when everyone left.
The foodie was not shy about her love of performing, often posting about her new hobby on Instagram. On June 9, the Vegas Chef Prizefight star said she was “having an ABSOLUTE blast” taking improv classes, something she first posted about in March. It was clearly something she thoroughly enjoyed, and we bet she was fantastic at it judging by her vibrant personality on TV!
Second City New York paid tribute to the student on Instagram, writing:
“We’re are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and student, Anne Burrell. She will be missed and remembered as a vibrant part of our Second City New York Training Center community. Anne brought joy, boldness, and an unwavering ‘yes, and’ spirit. Her enthusiasm was contagious, her presence unforgettable. Our thoughts go out to Anne’s family and loved ones.”
Very, very sad. Sending our love to all those mourning this untimely death.
