While America is going nuts about what to do with racist Donald Sterling, over in Europe, one man faced the issue head-on!
Barcelona defender Dani Alves had a banana thrown at him by an opposing fan during a game on Sunday, but instead of getting mad, he picked up the fruit and ate some of it. Then he played the game like normal.
When asked about it, Alves simply said:
“You need to take these situations with a dose of humor.”
After the game, the team with the vile fan, Villarreal, apologized for the incident. But other professional soccer players took the moment to make a stand against rampant racism in soccer.
Players like Neymar and Mario Balotelli, along with others, have shared pictures of themselves eating bananas, with the slogan “We are all monkeys.”
The best way to stop something is to take the power away, and that’s exactly what they’re doing!
And it’s been players from all countries and backgrounds that have gotten involved, showing that we really are all the same!
