Japanese Competitive Hole Digging! Who Thinks This Is Fun?

Who needs the Winter Olympics when you have Japanese Competitive Hole Digging! Right? Anyone?
In an event that seems like wholesome fun for everyone (especially if you enjoy somewhat pointless manual labor), nearly 300 teams competed in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture for the 14th Annual All-National Hole Digging Championship.
The games that pit one team’s pit digging skills against another’s offer a prize of roughly $1,000 and a golden shovel worth nearly the same amount! And let’s not forget about the prizes for costumes too!
Taku Suzuki, the event’s organizer, had this to say about this half-hour challenge that tests your ability to dig yourself into the largest hole:

“Once you’re an adult, I don’t think there is anywhere else in the world where you can competitively dig a hole. So we thought that people would enjoy this event.”

The winners this year were from Toyota City, and just like a Toyota, this team is going places! Those places are under the surface of the earth, but hey, way to dig deep guys!
