Katy Perry just popped in to say hey… with a new song!
The pop superstar dropped her latest single Small Talk on Thursday night, and it’s a pretty solid little bop!
Fans have been waiting for the song’s release since Katy Kat shared a series of handwritten notes from “the desk of Katy Perry” to her social accounts this week. One line in particular had KatyCats freaking out:
“I just can’t believe we went from strangers to lovers to strangers in a lifetime.”
Many couldn’t help but point out Katy’s use of the word “lovers” at a time when her former nemesis Taylor Swift was gearing up to release her next album, Lover. Fans hoped this meant Small Talk would be the Taylor/Katy collab they’ve been dreaming about — but alas, all that “lover” talk is just a lovely coincidence.

The track (below) is all Katy singing about an awkward relationship between two people who used to be intimate with each other. Some of the catchy lyrics include:
“Isn’t it strange, they used to know me / all the highs and lows and in-betweens and now you see me and just say hey / Isn’t it weird / that you’ve seen me naked / we had conversations about forever and now it’s about the weather OK.”
The 34-year-old also posted the single’s vibrant cover art (below), causing fans to believe the official music video will feature ’70s vibes.
The official video isn’t out yet, but along with the song’s release comes a rather entertaining lyric video to hold us over. Ch-ch-check it out (below)!
The new single, co-written by Charlie Puth, comes months after KP released Never Really Over, which came with a chic music video. A month later, Katy appeared in T.Swift’s music video for You Need to Calm Down, effectively putting an end to their years-long beef.
While Small Talk may not be the Taylor/Katy collab fans have been hoping for, such a collaboration is still a big possibility. Perry spoke on their rekindled friendship in an interview with KIIS 1065‘s The Kyle & Jackie O Show back in June, saying:
“I think both her and I, we have influence to young people, especially young girls, who are in this type of situation day in and day out at school and are going through a similar type thing. I can trust her and she can trust me and we’ll see each other in the halls of the music industry and not avoid each other and we’ll embrace. It’s amazing that we have had this opportunity to change, and I hope that other people can learn from it too.”
Sounds like they’re great at making small talk. Hopefully it turns into small collaboration sooner than later!
