Koalas To Be Listed As Threatened Species

This is not very good news for koalas and their fans alike!
The cutie animal is set be listed as a threatened species by Australia. Koala numbers are dwindling, especially in Gunnedah, a formerly koala heavy area that is now 75 percent less than its population in 1993.
Koalas will be listed as endangered in Queensland and vulnerable in New South Wales east of the Great Dividing Range, but activists don’t think this is enough.
Environmentalists believe that Parliament wants to protect mining interests with these areas, so some areas in need of protection will still be compromised.
But Environment Minister Tony Burke wants to ensure the public this is not the case.
He states:

I’ve heard very clearly from the community that people want to make sure that we protect the koala, one of Australia’s most iconic species.
‘We know that koalas are under pressure in some parts of Australia while they are abundant in others.
But I can’t provide a blanket threatened species listing across Australia when there are many places where koala numbers remain high

Sad…everything possible needs to be done to help the koala!
