Oh god… This Liam Payne news…
The investigation into the One Direction singer’s death has once again taken some disturbing turns. We knew Liam jumped from the balcony of his 4th story room at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Wednesday. When people first heard that report, some minds went to intentional self-harm, especially given Liam’s history with suicidal ideation. But the more investigators have uncovered since, the more it sounds like the reason the poor guy was not in his right his mind was drugs.
His room was trashed and full of white powder and drug paraphernalia. Multiple witnesses described him as “high” or “intoxicated” — as well as “erratic.” The hotel’s receptionist who called 911 before the singer’s death even said he was in and out of consciousness.

And we’ve heard from music industry sources that 100-day stint in rehab last year didn’t take. It’s a huge shame as he was reportedly telling everyone in the spring and summer of 2024 that he was still sober. Per TMZ, people in his circle saw no warning signs of going off the wagon just a few months ago.
Liam has suffered some setbacks recently, and we’ve heard the stress hasn’t been good for his sobriety. So maybe it really was just in the past few weeks that he really spiraled out of control. But this Argentina trip, especially once girlfriend Kate Cassidy flew home to the US over the weekend, sounds like it really went off the rails.
We’ve learned he had girls in his room, he was smashing things — including his laptop in the lobby, he was being really “aggressive.” One hotel guest who interacted with him thought it might be cocaine. But police have another theory.
Buenos Aires cops told TMZ on Friday afternoon their working theory is that he was on a new drug called “Cristal.” The street drug apparently has hallucinatory effects to go along with mania and aggression — and can even lead to psychotic attacks. Jeez, it sounds as bad as PCP! Or bath salts! This is some seriously dangerous stuff!
All of the behavior witnesses described fits with this theory. A drug that causes hallucinations might also give insight into the surprising finding by the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday. They determined Liam was not fully conscious during his fall to the ground. The office noted the body tenses up and by reflex tries to protect itself, even when someone jumps on purpose. Because his body didn’t, they believe he was in a “state of semi or total unconsciousness.”
Could it be possible he wasn’t even aware of the pool, the ground, the height, anything? If he was hallucinating… who knows?
So this brings up an important question. Liam was in Argentina. He wasn’t from there, had only been there two weeks. Where did he get this dangerous drug??
A source inside the prosecutor’s office told People the theory is that Liam got an employee at the CasaSur to procure the drugs for him. And if that’s true there could be hell to pay! The insider spilled:
“There appears to be evidence that a hotel employee sourced the drugs for Payne. An indictment for drugs distribution could follow shortly.”
Right, we imagine this employee could be in serious trouble if the drugs they got a guest ended up with an extremely famous person leaping to their death at your hotel. Perhaps even beyond just a drug charge?
We guess we’ll have to see if anyone sees any consequences here.
