Liam Payne Says Staying In One Direction 'Would Have Killed [Him]'

Liam Payne One Direction Would Have Killed Me Quote

Liam Payne is opening up like never before about how being part of a worldwide phenomenon was making him a household name — but destroying his personal identity.

The Strip That Down singer spoke to Jessie Ware on the Table Manners podcast this week, explaining the toll being in One Direction took on his mental health.

He made the bold statement:

“I needed to stop, definitely. It would have killed me. One hundred percent.”

Wow! But what does he mean?

He explained the schedule was a “mess” in which he felt he was being worked to death and pushed along from gig to gig. He says the tours were sold out before the first song on the album was recorded, leading to a unique kind of stress.

“There’s no stop button. You’ve got no control over your life. That’s why I lost complete control of everything.”

Liam says life in the band was “mega stressful”:

“We were definitely overworked… I had no personal life. I learned nothing about myself.”

Now that is a healthy phrase. The fact he is acknowledging the importance of self care now just goes to show what a good place he’s in these days.

So when it came time for Liam, Louis TomlinsonNiall Horan, and Harry Styles to part ways in 2016 (Zayn Malik had long since been a solo act), it for sure was “really scary at first” but ultimately crucial to his growth as a human being.

In fact, he says when he eventually spoke to a professional about the stress, he had a moment of clarity right away:

“I remember getting to therapy and the guy was like ‘What do you like to do?’ I didn’t know.”

Payne says rather than feeling like a whole person, he “learned to become a recluse” when he wasn’t working — mostly to avoid the rabid fanbase and unrelenting paparazzi.

“That was life… I just lived so long as this reclusive pop star who was afraid of people, who just stayed inside all the time.”

Eesh! That almost sounds like agoraphobia!

We’re so glad Liam got the help he needed — and that he and the other boys understood it was time to make a change.

So how is Liam coping as a solo artist?

He says he has found a healthy balance between fun and work. Which is good because as he sees it the alternative was very dire indeed:

“You’re either going to end up a crazy child star who dies at whatever age, or you’re going to live life and actually get on with it.”

Do YOU agree the 1D boys have seemed happier and more complete since the breakup??
