New research has found some unsettling info about whether lobsters and crabs feel pain.
Apparently, the new consensus is yes, yes they do. And that’s just awful.
Scientists have being working on finding solid evidence that crabs, lobsters, octopuses (octopi?) and other invertebrates feel pain.
They studied things like when a crab had a claw removed. The crab would rub the injured area and pick at their wound.
The crustaceans would even contort themselves into awkward positions to reach the injury.
A scientists involved in the study said:
“These are not just reflexes. This is prolonged and complicated behavior, which clearly involves the central nervous system.”
Basically, he’s saying they feel pain and are aware of injuries.
Sure, it’s easier to eat a delicious lobster soaked in butter if you don’t think about the pain it had to endure to reach your plate.
But that doesn’t make it any less awful.
