A man in Wales is dead after a horrific accident that took place in his kitchen. And because he was cooking alone, his body wasn’t found for days afterwards.
This week, authorities in the city of Powys, Wales held an inquest into the death last July of a 57-year-old named Barry Griffiths. He was apparently a “very private man” who suffered a stroke prior to his death and was restricted to only using one arm in daily activities.
Last July, one of his daily activities was evidently to take a couple burgers out of the freezer in his kitchen and cook them for dinner. But unfortunately, they were frozen together — and he had to get a knife out to separate them. Per the inquest, Griffiths apparently tried to split the burgers and ended up plunging the knife blade into his stomach in a horrible freak accident. And then, he staggered across the house to his death. OMG…

Per the US Sun, Barry had lived alone in a supportive housing accommodation following his stroke. After the accident, nobody saw him for more than a week. Concerned, they called the police. And when cops showed up, they found a horrible sight: Barry’s dead body, and blood all over the kitchen, hallway, bathroom, and bedroom.
At first, authorities were obviously worried that Griffiths had been murdered. But as they began to investigate, they discovered a few things. For one, none of his valuables had been stolen. Beyond that, there was no sign of a disturbance in the house — save for all the blood. And confusingly, the freezer door was wide open. Picking up on that final clue, detectives noticed the burgers left on a kitchen counter, and slowly pieced together what happened.
This week’s inquest definitively ruled out homicide in Barry’s death. It also ruled out suicide. Sergeant Stephen Vaughan noted that Griffiths’ passing was “more of an unexplained death.” The region’s coroner Patricia Morgan similarly concluded that Barry likely died from an accident with the knife while trying to separate the frozen burgers. She testified:
“I appreciate the evidence is difficult to hear and traumatic. Thank you for your patience while the investigation was ongoing. I express my condolences at this difficult time.”
So, so sad. And to think what those final moments of his life must have been like. Awful… Stay safe out there, everyone, especially when cooking alone! And remember, NEVER cut toward yourself!
