Lauren London & Nipsey Hussle's Family Accepts BET Humanitarian Award On Behalf Of Late Rapper

Lauren London accepts humanitarian award on Nipsey Hussle's behalf

This was incredibly moving.
Nipsey Hussle’s girlfriend Lauren London joined the late rapper’s family to accept the Humanitarian Award on his behalf at the 2019 BET Awards.
After the award was presented by T.I., London took the stage alongside Hussle’s family, including his son Kross and daughter Emani, where the Grammy nominee was honored for his work revitalizing his South Los Angeles neighborhood.

The first to speak was Nipsey’s grandmother, who expressed immeasurable gratitude for the outpouring of support the family has received since the performer’s tragic death earlier this year. When it was London’s turn to speak, she kept things short and sweet, adding:

“I just want to thank you guys for all of the love and support and the marathon continues again.”

The Marathon Clothing Company owner’s parents then took turns addressing the crowd.
His mother, Angelique Smith, spoke on her belief in the afterlife, musing that we’re all “vessels” on this side of the universe. His father, Dawit Asghedom, said he wished his son and “friend” was here to accept the award in person and perform for his fans.

Nipsey was then honored further with a musical tribute, which kicked off with Marsha Ambrosius singing Real Big followed by YG performing a piece of Last Time I Checc’d. The act ended with John Legend and DJ Khaled delivering an emotional rendition of Higher.
All the songs are either Hussle’s or featured him.

Legend later spoke with ET backstage about the performance, revealing he was “honored” that Nipsey’s family was there to watch it. He said:

“It was moving just sitting there watching his family react to the song. It was a powerful moment. Honored to be there.”

The network previously revealed that it intended to honor the rapper posthumously for “driving change for the betterment of his community, empowering and employing those in need and being an influential and highly respected leader,” according to a statement from Connie Orlando, Executive Vice-President, Head of Programming at BET.
The statement continued:

“His passing was a tremendous loss to the entertainment industry and to the culture. We will continue to remember his advocacy and be inspired by the groundwork he set forth and his dire commitment to social change.”

Nipsey may be gone, but his humanitarian work and musical legacy won’t be forgotten.
