American Apparel Courts Controversy By Featuring Former Muslim Model Topless In Its Ads

american apparel made in bangladesh
No stranger to controversy, American Apparel has released another salacious ad that’s sure to set tongues wagging.
The company’s latest marketing involves a Bengali model posing topless and wearing unbuttoned jeans that reveal her turquoise panties, with the words “Made in Bangladesh” emblazoned across her chest.
The model, Maks, was born in Bangladesh but moved to the States when she was only four years old, and since then she’s distanced herself from her Muslim upbringing. She’s also been working as a manufacturer for American Apparel since 2010.
The story at the bottom of the ad explains why Maks is such a uniquely important part of the many cultures and people that make up Los Angeles, but the ad has sparked debate for being sexist and objectifying.
Critics have also taken issue with the “Made in Bangladesh” tagline that seems to be a swipe at other clothing companies that use poorly compensated workers in places like Bangladesh and India to make their wares, while American Apparel is noted for paying fair wages to its workers in the United States.
Regardless of its message, the ad will surely stir up much dialogue AND traffic for the company.
And that’s probably the point!
