Serena Williams Says She & Meghan Markle Are 'Relying On Each Other' Lately

Serena Williams and Meghan Markle are more alike than people might realize!

The two powerhouses have been friends for some time, but lately their bond has become tighter as both women are at the center of public attention wherever they go.

Whether it’s touring the world as a Royal or dominating the tennis court, no one else can fathom how much public scrutiny they’re facing!

In her first interview since losing the US Open, Serena opened up to Australian news show The Project about her feelings on the awful umpire debacle and her relationship with the Duchess.

When initially asked about how close the two are, Williams replied:

“We were actually just texting each other this morning. We have known each other for a long time, but we really are relying on each other a lot recently.”

As the interviewer aptly points out, it’s hard to think of other women in the public eye who deal with the media throws at the Suits star and the tennis legend.

Both ladies remain relatively unbothered, living their best lives with their husbands and family.

Serena shared what it was like watching her bestie tie the knot earlier this year:

“I felt like we were literally watching history. I feel like in a few years, when I look back at that moment, it’s just gonna be so historic. It’s gonna be something people never forget.”

Serena Williams Opens Up About U.S. Open Incident In A Preview Of Her First Sit-Down Interview

Serena Opens Up

Tennis Superstar Discusses That U.S. Open Incident In Teaser Of First Sit-Down Interview Since

Serena Williams is adamant — she did NOT receive coaching during that controversial U.S. Open tennis final that everybody can’t stop talking about.

The tennis superstar sat down with The Sunday Project, an Australian news show, in an interview set to air next weekend — and she’s not backing down from her position, despite her own coach now actually admitting otherwise.

When asked about it after the controversial incident, Serena’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou admitted he was coaching at the time his player was penalized for receiving coaching — although he argues Serena never saw him do it!

The coach said (below):

“I’m honest, I was coaching. I don’t think she looked at me, so that’s why she didn’t even think I was.”

Wow!

But regardless of that, Williams is clear that she didn’t receive it as coaching — nor did she even understand it, as she told the news show (below):

“He said he made a motion, I don’t understand what he was talking about. We’ve never had signals. I just don’t understand. If you’re a female you should be able to do, even half, of what a guy can do.”

And even her coach argues that what the umpire Carlos Ramos did in the moment to Serena was beyond extreme (below):

“There is the rule and there’s a psychology the chair umpire is supposed to have. He would say he saw you coach, do a movement and give a warning. What he did was so extreme. It’s a shame. There’s a rule, yes. But you don’t screw a Grand Slam final and make it the drama the way it was. It could have easily been avoided if there was psychology. [He] treated her like a cheater. She felt completely humiliated. That’s why she reacted like that. Integrity is the most important thing to her.”

Interesting!

The interview teaser also suggests that Williams struggled at one point to answer a question posed about the incident, and the clip further promises that Serena is “expected to do something she has never done in front of the camera before.”

Hmmm…

What could that be?!

Whatever it is, it’ll air next Sunday evening on The Sunday Project in Australia… and we’ll have more on this soon after!

J.K. Rowling, Kathy Griffin, & More Slam Cartoonist Over ‘Racist’ Drawing Of Serena Williams

WTF!?

Twitter Slams Cartoonist Over ‘Racist’ Drawing Of Serena Williams!

A cartoonist painted Serena Williams in a rather unflattering light and people are slamming the drawing for being “racist” and “sexist.”

Fans and public figures alike took to Twitter to condemn a cartoon published in Australia’s Herald Sun that shows the tennis legend stomping on her racket like an irate child.

The drawing was an outrageous depiction of Williams’ controversial U.S. Open match this weekend — which took a dramatic turn when chair umpire Carlos Ramos charged her with multiple code violations, prompting the 36-year-old to bust her racket and call the umpire a thief.

Fans are divided on whether or not Williams deserved the violations, but everyone seems to agree that cartoonist Mark Knight’s interpretation of the event is appalling and completely uncalled for.

J.K. Rowling slammed the illustrator for using “racist and sexist tropes” in his work, tweeting:

Kathy Griffin offered a much blunter critique, tweeting:

Even ESPN’s Jemele Hill weighed in, writing:

Countless Twitter users felt the same way, with one noting Knight used “classic sambo tropes- enlarged lips, overexaggerated body parts to depict Serena as hyper masculine.”

Another user snapped:

At the U.S. Open final today, Serena was given a coaching violation early in the second set after an official said she received some type of coaching in the middle of the match when she was allegedly looking towards her family in the stands.

But beyond the violation itself, which was contested, Williams WENT OFF at the insinuation from it that she would cheat during the match — and she absolutely gave it to the ref mercilessly, even going so far as to invoke her daughter in the argument as she tried to defend her character.

It’s incredible to watch her take down the official and even go so far as to bring in the head referee and demand an apology and a fair call, actually — watch the full interchange caught by ESPN cameras with full audio (below):
