Get ready for a shorter version of the Grammys next year, in a manner of speaking.

This morning, it was annnounced that the Grammys will be getting a revamp in the coming year, with new rules put in to place and the amount of catergories getting a significant slash.

The biggest change home viewers will see is that 31 categories have been eliminated from the roster, including gender-based solo awards in the pop, R&B, rock and country. From now on, female and male performers in these categories will compete against each other in the single “solo performance” category of their genre.

So… Lady Gaga, Usher, Bruno Mars – that means those Grammys you got this year are the last of their kind! Treasure them!

Now, as for the remaining categories, the new rule is that it needs have 40 artist entries in order for it to move forward. Should a category receive between 25 and 39, there will only be three recordings nominated that year. If there are fewer than 25 submissions, the category will not be presented and in the future, be discontinued if there are fewer than 25 entries for three consecutive years.

All good ideas, if you ask us. By tightening things up, it makes it more of a competition and increases the sense of pride for the artists nominated.

And besides, do we really need the “Best Surround Sound Album” category? Really?
