This is absolutely awful.
On Monday, there was quite a bit of a scare in Mississippi at Delta State University as shots were fired on campus around 10:30 a.m. which killed assistant history professor and married father-of-three, Ethan Schmidt (above right).
The suspect, Shannon Lamb (above middle), was also a teacher at Delta since 2009 and had an expertise in “geography of crime.”

This was mere hours after Lamb had reportedly shot and killed his girlfriend, Amy Prentiss (above left), at their home in Gautier, Mississippi around 6 a.m.
Lamb apparently shot Prentiss and then drove 300 miles to his place of work to kill Schmidt, but before doing so, he called in the first murder to police.
It was shortly after the campus shooting that Cleveland Police confirmed and tweeted out that there was an active shooter on Delta State’s ground and they urged people to stay indoors and away from windows. Police also locked down other schools in the area just as an extra precaution.
At some point during the day, Lamb had contacted police to give them a grim foreshadowing of events to come by telling them that he “wasn’t going to jail.”
It was around midnight after about 12 hours on the run that the suspect was spotted in traffic by police. Once the man was cornered, he fled his vehicle and ran into the woods where police heard a single gunshot and found Lamb’s body shortly after where he was pronounced dead.
There are no details yet on the motive, but Fox News has speculated that these murders may have been the result of a love triangle — though there are no details to confirm the relations between these victims.
A fellow professor at the school remembers Dr. Ethan Schmidt as:
“… a terrific family man, a good friend, a true son of Peabody, Kansas, and his beloved Emporia State University.”
We can’t imagine what the family and friends of the victims are going through and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.
