UPDATE 6:47 P.M. EST: DMX has been released from jail on Friday after posting $500,000 bond (an amount he needed two co-signers for). According to TMZ, the rapper has pleaded not guilty to all 14 counts of tax evasion. A judge has also issued travel restrictions, prohibiting him from leaving the NYC area. Stay tuned…
DMX turned himself in to the feds Thursday evening after getting hit with 14 counts of tax evasion.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says the rapper could face could face up to 44 years in prison for hiding his income over several years and owning the IRS about $1.7 million!
According to the indictment, the 46-year-old didn’t file taxes for ANY of the millions he made from his chart topping songs, performances and TV show appearances over the years.
The docs say DMX, real name Earl Simmons, went out of his way to evade taxes, including avoiding personal bank accounts, setting up surrogate accounts, and paying large expenses in cash.
Simmons even allegedly refused to tape his Celebrity Couples Therapy appearance in order to rip off the IRS what was owed. After the proper taxes had been withheld in the initial check, X demanded that producers issue him a new check for the full amount of $125,000 — which he got!
But it looks like he’ll finally have to pay up — just like these other celebs who have dealt with tax troubles.
