Donald Trump may be trying to make nice with Meghan Markle after calling the Duchess of Sussex “nasty,” but he has much less forgiving words for Bette Midler.
The award-winning artist and vocal critic of the president took to Twitter on Monday to apologize after posting a Trump quote that she learned was fake.

You’ve probably seen the quote in question, where Trump was said to have told People magazine back in 1998:
“If I were to run [for President], I’d run as a Republican. They’re the dumbest group of voters in the country. They believe anything on Fox News. I could lie and they’d still eat it up. I bet my numbers would be terrific.”
The quote has widely circulated the internet over the past few years — but, as it turns out, was debunked in 2015 after fact-checking site Snopes had conducted a review of it. People also dug into its archives in pursuit of the quote, but was not able to find it.
After Bette’s followers pointed this out to her, she took the high road and issued an apology, tweeting:
It’s okay, gurl. There’s a lot of garbage out there these days; it can be tough to know what’s real and what’s not!
The important thing is we own up to it if we’re later proven wrong — which she did!
But POTUS wasn’t at all impressed by the actress’ conceding.
He barked back at the superstar on Twitter, calling her a “washed up psycho” and a “sick scammer” for daring to post fake quotes about a man who never in his life has misinformed the public, writing:
Ugh. He never fails to relish in these small victories.
But really? Calling her “washed up psycho”?? Bish, Bette performed at the Oscars this year!
Midler, however, wasn’t about to let Trump forget about his history of peddling misinformation for his own personal gain. She wrote in a response tweet:
Ha! Wash him up, queen!
The 73-year-old Hollywood vet proved her point the following day when she called out the president for another statement in which he apparently lied about the size of the crowd greeting him on his trip to the U.K., tweeting:
LOLz, got him again!
Research it before you tweet it, Perezious Readers. Unless you’re the president, apparently.
