After Thursday’s preview night baffled box office analysts with the highest premiere numbers of the entire year, Guardians Of The Galaxy continued to rocket its way into the record books this weekend!
Taking in an estimated $94 million – quite a bit more than the original predictions of around $65m – Marvel’s newest team franchise was one of the year’s biggest openers, behind only Transformers 4 and Captain America 2.
It also OBLITERATED the record for biggest August opening, previously held by The Bourne Ultimatum at $69.3m, and more than doubled the previous record for August IMAX ticket sales.
But the most interesting number, as usual, was all about sex. It turns out that all those extra ticket sales that analysts didn’t account for? They may have all been bought by women!
According to exit polls, women made up over 44% of the audience! That’s more than any previous Marvel film, even The Avengers!
