We reported earlier how J.K. Rowling admitted that Harry Potter should have been Hermione’s romantic Chosen One, and for many, it was like receiving a million Cruciatus curses.
J.K. and Emma Watson discussed more in that interview Emma conducted for the Sunday Times about how The Boy Who Lived should have been The Boy Who Loved Hermione!
J.K. talked at great length about how the Hermione and Ron were just not two peas in a pod mandrakes in a pot:
“It was a young relationship. I think the attraction itself is plausible but the combative side of it├óΓé¼┬ª I├óΓé¼Γäóm not sure you could have got over that in an adult relationship, there was too much fundamental incompatibility. I can├óΓé¼Γäót believe we are saying all of this ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ this is Potter heresy! In some ways Hermione and Harry are a better fit…”
J.K. and Emma went on to talk about how the sexually tense Deathly Hallows dance scene in the tent showed the audience a “ghost of what could have been,” and demonstrated how the two “needed to be together” in that moment.
However, the two did not rule out all hope for those who cherished the Ron-Hermione relationship, as J.K. mentioned that the problematic couple might work things out (perhaps through not-so-magical means):
“Oh, maybe she and Ron will be alright with a bit of counseling, you know. I wonder what happens at wizard marriage counseling? They├óΓé¼Γäóll probably be fine. He needs to work on his self-esteem issues and she needs to work on being a little less critical.”
Indeed, when J.K. talked about Ron’s need to become his own man, Emma agreed:
“Yes, and until he does it is unresolved. It is unfinished business. So maybe life presented this to him enough times until he had to make a choice and become the man that Hermione needs.”
It’s hard for us to handle when two celebrities break up, let alone two fictional characters! We hope their love turns out to be an Unbreakable Vow!
