Talking Mac

With the shocking loss of comedian Bernie Mac, it’s no surprise that his death has been exceptionally hard on his wife of 30 years, Rhonda.

And in a recent interview, she explains what she’s going through after the death of her husband last week weekend.

The couple last spoke just the day before his death.

She says, “He didn’t look good to me and I knew this could be it.”

Rhonda was with him at the hospital and recalls, “I said, ‘Hey Bernard. How are you?’ and I kissed his forehead. He shrugged his shoulders, like ‘I’m tired’ and I said, ‘I know you’re tired.’ Later on that night, it took a turn for the worse.”

Luckily Rhonda says she is comforted by the support of her family and friends, and by the memories she keeps of her relationship with Bernie.

She even recalls one time after meeting Bernie, saying, “He said, ‘You never seen a black man as pretty as me.’ And I said, ‘No, I sure haven’t.’ And he said, ‘Girl, you know I’m so beautiful.'”

And just a few months later, on Valentine’s Day, Bernie asked her to stop by his shop class for a surprise, and they shared their first kiss.

Wow, it took some time for that first kiss. Things moved slowly back then we guess.

The couple then married in 1977 when they were both 19 years old. A year later they welcomed their first baby daughter.

As for Rhonda today, reality has sunk in and she says her depression “comes in waves.”

Adding, “I get through because I know he’s in a better place now.”
