Eight days after suffering a stroke in the hospital, John Singleton is in a coma at a Los Angeles hospital, according to court papers.
In light of his current condition, his mother Shelia Ward is requesting she be appointed his temporary conservator to make medical and financial decisions on his behalf while he is incapacitated.

In the legal documents, it is noted that he did not have any medical directives in case of an emergency, but was engaged in several business deals and negotiations at the time of his stroke, with one lucrative settlement agreement set to be signed on or around April 30, which she would like to execute on his behalf.
AP reports that his estate is valued at an estimated is $1.4 million, and it is unclear how much the aforementioned settlement agreement is valued at.
According to TMZ, the papers cite that the acclaimed director and screenwriter is “unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”
As we previously reported, his family announced via a statement on Saturday, April 20 that he had suffered a stroke three days prior:
“On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues.”
The 51-year-old became the first black director ever nominated for an Academy Award for his debut feature film, Boyz n the Hood. The gritty film about life in south central Los Angeles sparked success for Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut in their first acting roles. The film also starred more legends, including Cuba Gooding Jr., Laurence Fishburne, Nia Long, Regina King, and Angela Bassett.
His other works include directing the films Poetic Justice starring Janet Jackson, and Rosewood, starring Tupac Shakur. As for TV, he’s directed episodes of Empire and Billions, as well as The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story. Most recently, he has worked as a creator and executive producer on the FX series Snowfall.
Since the news broke on Saturday of his hospitalization, actors, colleagues, friends, and fans, including Snoop Dogg, Viola Davis, Mark Wahlberg, and Guillermo Del Toro, have shared their hope for his speedy recovery on social media.
