Just because Anderson Cooper and his mother Gloria Vanderbilt are close and wrote a book together and are filming a documentary doesn’t mean they know EVERYTHING about each other.
The mother and son recently sat down for an interview with People and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle and Cooper learned that his mother once had a same-sex relationship.

Thankfully the moment was ON CAMERA! Gloria revealed:

“I, myself, when I went to [Miss Porter’s School in] Farmington, [Connecticut] I went through a brief so-called lesbian relationship with a girl in school.”

While the reveal is great, it’s really Anderson’s reaction that makes this moment precious as he says:

“What? Hello, this is news to me. You didn’t mention this in the book, Mom.”

Vanderbilt, who was 13 at the time of the relationship went on to say:

“I think almost everybody goes through at one point ├óΓé¼┬ª of course, the thing is, now we realize there’s no difference. Love is love.”

Ch-ch-check out Anderson do the best double take ever when he learns of his mother’s lesbian relationship (below)!

Cooper and Vanderbilt’s documentary Nothing Left Unsaid airs on April 9 on HBO, and you can pick up their memoir, The Rainbow Comes and Goes: A Mother and Son Talk About Life, Love, and Loss, when it hits stands April 5.
