On the heels of Charice coming out of the closet, the former Glee star’s mother says she knows EXACTLY what she’s going through!
Raquel Pempengco has recently spoken out about her daughter’s big announcement, and says she too was a lesbian in her younger years, but was pressured to begin dating men and start a family instead:
“I’m the lesbian — until my mom sent me off to my husband and [Charice’s] father. I told Charice this before, I told her that I experienced what it’s like, too. But then I changed.”
Raquel has reportedly had a hard time dealing with her daughter’s decision to come out, but now she’s trying to clear the air, and says that’s NOT true:
“I spoke out because I couldn’t take the accusations that I couldn’t accept my daughter. If there’s one person who knows what it’s like, it’s me. But as you can see, I kept it hidden for so many years, because I didn’t want to destroy her.”
Charice has apparently been living with a friend for the past few months, and hasn’t kept much contact with her mother or her brother, but now it looks like both sides might be trying to rekindle their relationship.
Raquel goes on to say:
“At the end of the day, after God, family is still the place we can run to. Friends will come and go, and they will pass — but [my son] and I believe that family are the people you can run to because they were given to us even before we were born. They are the people who will be with us, take care of us, love us even if we can’t offer anything in return.”
Considering what Raquel went through in her younger years, she should know just how emotional of a time her daughter is going through right now.
Hopefully the two can patch things up, because having her family’s support would probably mean a lot to Charice right now!
