Del Monte Files Lawsuit Against FDA For Cantaloupe Recall

Del Monte quality

In our opinion, recalls are meant to be safety precautions, but apparently Del Monte feels their “quality” should never be questioned.

The FDA issued a recall last March of the company’s cantaloupes because of a suspected Salmonella contamination. In response, Del Monte SUED the FDA and is now suing the state of Oregon, saying:

[“t]he FDA investigation ultimately found no connection between Del Monte Fresh cantaloupes and any cases of Salmonella Panama, including in Oregon.”

The CDC, however, found imported Del Monte cantaloupes were the source of an outbreak that affected 20 people in the United States, one of which, is suing Del Monte.

We think there is too much suing going on here and the food protection agencies were just doing their job. It’s arguable that the fruit did or did not harm any customer, but at the end of the day, we’d rather see companies put SAFETY ahead of SALES.
