On Tuesday, Geraldo Rivera‘s son was arrested on assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, aggravated harassment, attempted assault, and harassment charges for allegedly biting and choking a woman.
According to police via People, the alleged victim traveled to Cruz Rivera‘s apartment in Washington Heights to collect her belongings. Allegedly, the 30-year-old bit her hand and leg, and choked her until she nearly lost consciousness. A neighbor — not the accuser — called 911 after the alleged incident.

During Rivera’s arraignment the next day, the woman in question refused to go forward with the case. Cruz did not enter a plea, and was released without bail.
Cruz’s attorney Arthur Aidala says his client denies the allegations, adding:
“Although we are taking this very seriously, we are cautiously optimistic that when the dust settles, Cruz Rivera will be able to move on with his life with little interruption.”
The lawyer says the woman allegedly sent his client “text messages that she was sorry about this and that it won’t go any further and that she loves him.”
Not surprisingly, Aidala says Geraldo is “very upset” about his son’s case, adding:
“Anyone whose child is arrested would be upset… Because these are claims of domestic violence, which Geraldo feels very strongly about and is strongly against, it takes it to a different level. Now that the facts are out, it seems this was a misunderstanding.”
Last month, Cruz shared a video on Facebook that claims “40 percent of domestic violence is suffered by men.”
His next hearing is scheduled for June.
