While tons of stars have put the Academy on blast for not properly representing minorities, Helen Mirren thinks it’s “unfair” to attack them for the lack of diversity in the Oscars nominees!
On Wednesday, the Trumbo actress addressed the controversy with England’s Channel 4 News, and came to the defense of the Academy!

When asked if she felt the prestigious award show was “behind the times” for having all-white actor nominees for the second consecutive year, she said:
“I don’t think it’s the Oscars, I think it’s unfair to attack the Academy. It just so happened it went that way.”
The 70-year-old explained how Idris Elba should have been nominated for Beasts of No Nation, but “not enough people saw ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ or wanted to see ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ a film about child soldiers.”
We guess voters for the SAG Awards DID want to see a film about child soldiers, since Elba won Best Supporting Actor for his role this weekend!

But being the Dame that she is, Mirren clarified her comments, adding:
“I’m saying that the issue we need to be looking at is what happens before the film gets to the Oscars. What kind of films are made, and the way in which they’re cast, and the scripts…So it’s those things that are much more influential ultimately than who stands there with an Oscar.”
Well said! And actually fairly in line with the sentiments of George Clooney and Whoopi Goldberg on the subject.
Mirren was also asked about her thoughts on what would happen if Donald Trump became president, to which she had a much harsher response:
“I can’t imagine how the world would look. I think it’s a very frightening idea myself. And this whole idea of ├óΓé¼╦£making America great,’ it seems to me that it would actually sort of be the end of America as a great country.”
We have a feeling that’s the mentality of most people across the pond! LOLz!
