Police Urge Parents To Stay Alert After New Jersey Mom Finds Heroin In Child's Halloween Candy!

Police find heroin in kids candy on Halloween.

It’s that spooky time of year again when we’re all allowed to indulge in our fair share of sweets.

But authorities are warning parents to be on high alert and protect youngsters from possible drug threats in their trick-or-treating hauls this year after a New Jersey woman discovered heroin in her child’s Halloween candy!

The young boy’s mother called the police after she found a small package of white powder in his bag after a Trick-or-Treat event in Rio Grande. After being tested in a lab, officials confirmed it was the potentially deadly drug.

In an official statement to ABC6, the mother (who asked not to be identified) said she knew something was off when she came across an object that looked nothing like a common savory treat. She said:

“I looked at it twice and I said this is not candy. I showed it to my sister and we realized that it was not candy and then we called the police.”

The Middle Township resident expressed gratitude she caught the addictive substance before anyone else did, as she continued:

“I’m so thankful no one got to it. We have an infant here, a five and seven-year-old. Anyone of them could’ve grabbed it.”

Ugh. Scary!

Thanks to this dutiful mom’s quick thinking, a very dangerous situation was avoided in the nick of time. And, she makes a great point. What five or seven-year-old do you know needs heroin in their candy stash? None, none ’em do.

As we mentioned at the top, the family attended a Halloween-themed shindig just before finding heroin in the kid’s goodies. Police are now looking into how the narcotic got into the child’s possession and the Shore Family Success Center which hosted the event is reportedly cooperating with the investigation.

Apparently, not all party favors are good…

Michelle DeWeese, the first assistant prosecutor for Cape May County in NJ, spoke to the outlet and warned parents not to even touch suspicious substances if they’re uncovered in their kids’ candy. She advised:

“If you do see anything suspicious do not touch it because anything laced with fentanyl, while that was not the case with our matter, anything laced with fentanyl can be deadly. We’re in the middle of an opioid epidemic. It’s everywhere. It’s in our children’s trick-or-treat bags.”

Law enforcement also warned moms and dads out there to be especially wary of treats that are not in a sealed manufacturer’s wrapper, including anything contained in plastic baggies or cling film.

They’ve also asked them to be vigilant of cannabis products such as gummies and chocolates that come in colorful packaging attractive to children as they sometimes look, smell, and even taste like regular treats. In states like California where weed is legal, parents are more likely to be familiar with it and spot it sooner than most.

We’re hard-pressed to understand why anyone would give drugs to children, but then again, this is the world we live in. Sigh.

Reactions, Perezcious readers?? Are U planning to hit your neighborhood for sweets on Halloween? And are you worried about finding substances in your candy?
